This course is an introduction to art history and culture. The course will focus on the development and application of critical thinking skills through investigations into what art is, its social, cultural and historical significance. Emphasis will be given to the exposure to many different art forms by clarification of art terminology and techniques and by exploration of the elements of visual language, their nature and functions in painting, printing, sculpture, architecture and other major art forms. Major artistic movements will be examined while emphasis will be given on diverse functions of art and the political, religious or philosophical ideas supporting them. This chronological look at the history of art begins with the prehistoric cave drawings and ends with Gothic art.
